Q: Hi Jim. I just wanted to know why, when replacing a liquid filter line dryer on an air conditioning system, the dryer seems significantly larger than the factory original (sometimes two to three times). Also, what dryer construction is better – molecular sieve or core type? ~Ted Kaneshiro

A: Thanks for the question, Ted. I spoke with our Engineering Manager and this is
what he had to offer:

Filter dryers remove moisture within the refrigeration. The size of the dryer relates
to the effective volume of desiccant – typically 8, 16, or 30 cubic inches. In some
cases, we standardize over what the factory actually calls out, which explains the
size difference. Carrier has approved a compacted fill made up of molecular
sieve for our systems. Through numerous reliability tests, this design has yielded
the best filtration and dirt capacity results per ASHRAE standard 63.2”.
